Last Summer Weekend

We headed north a couple weekends ago to celebrate Q's birthday - and for one more summer weekend at the lake. Instead of our usual get-up-early, spend-half-a-day-on-the-road routine, we got organized, met a home a few minutes early to load up, picked up the kids from day care, and headed north. The kids did awesome in the car. The only bump was that my bright idea of a "healthy dinner" stop at Subway took an hour. For sandwiches. And the restroom didn't have a changing table. So ... Fiona and I trotted over to the Tae Kwon Do studio next door, looked pathetic, and got permission to cath her in their back room. Mama has no shame when it comes to not cathing the girl on a public restroom floor!

We were hoping to go to the cabin on Friday, but the day turned out to be pretty overcast and not terribly hot. Not a bad day to be outside - just not a super day to be in the lake. We had heard a rumor that cousin Otto was going to be at a local county fair with his grandma and grandpa. So I called my cousin and invited us to their fair outing. It was about an hour ride to Chisholm and we wish that anyone (hint: D and/or Q) would have fallen asleep on the drive. Everyone was feeling the late arrival from the night before. We connected with Otto and he and Fiona shared their mutual love of farm animals while wandering around the barns. Then we found an ATV show for Dec and Otto. Those little boys were awe-struck by the flying four-wheelers!

At the midway, we discovered that the kids needed to be 36" to go on any ride (except the carousel). Poor Declan is not 36" tall. And was super bummed that he wasn't. It was no fun watching his sisters go on the little train, the little cars, and the little four-wheelers. He did like riding the carousel with Otto - and Daddy broke balloons with darts and won him a stuffed alligator. Fiona enjoyed the roller coaster and the funhouse. Quinn was super brave and had quite an independent streak as she went on the rides.

Saturday still wasn't the warmest August day, but it was a little better. And we were pretty much going to the cabin rain or shine! My sister and parents came out with us and then Mike's sister and family met us out there as well. We played in the sand for a while, watched Dec catch a fish, ate lunch, and then swim-suited up.

The afternoon was perfect as we spent it splashing in the lake, taking the kayaks out, hanging with the cousins, and going on a pontoon ride. Q got to drive the boat and loved it. She was such a good driver that little brother completely zonked out on the boat! We had dilly bars for the group and sang Happy Birthday to Quinn. Nobody was particularly pleased when I announced that it was time to go. Including Quinn. It may be the first time she was totally bummed to leave the lake! But - birthday pizza dinner was calling!

We headed out early on Sunday and were home in time to spend most of the afternoon on the trampoline. We were gone for a couple days ... they clearly missed it! Best of all, Q thought it was a great way to spend her birthday weekend.
