The Season of Quinn

Quinn has embraced spring with every ounce of passion she possesses. It's amazing to watch her this spring ... fearlessly exploring and coming into her own as a truly "big" kid. While still heavily restricted, the kids have a bit more run of the neighborhood (read: cul-de-sac) this summer and they do not require constant parental supervision when outside. They have so far proven responsible enough to stay within their given boundaries, get along with their friends, and watch for cars.

As part of this new-found freedom, Quinn has commandeered the rollerblades that Mike bought for the crew and is determined to master them. She's on wheels as much as she's not! And Ev is delighted to have a blading partner. It's much more fun to rollerblade with a friend. A whole summer of rollerblading will also not hurt her skating skills for hockey next season ... tricky dad. Although maybe not as tricky as he thought ... as two Vannestes seem to never get a turn on the blades.

When Q's not on her rollerblades, it's a safe bet that she is in the trampoline. The year of gymnastics is showing itself big time and she's figured out how to do front flips. I didn't get it on video, but she's even done a couple where her hands didn't touch. It's extremely impressive to watch Quinn master a skill. She is not deterred by "failure" - and instead has a determination and a confidence in herself that I hope she never loses. She also has a really good "I will get this if it kills me" look that feels oddly familiar. And is a little bit scary.

A final Quinn moment that is less about this season and more specific to our current season of life. Q is a good reader, but not a voracious one like Bugs. She just doesn't have the desire to sit still and lose herself in a book (yet). Unless ...

Little bro is becoming Mr. Independent and does not need or want the sisters' help anymore (unless it is tricking them into doing his chores for him). Except he can't read quite yet. So this morning when he asked Q to read to him, she was so happy to (and so delighted to be needed). He was equally delighted to be read to (and to know that she's still putty in his charming little hands). Hearing the two of them together was the absolute best way to start the day!
