Our Fiona

Mike and I have been asked several times lately how Fiona got her name. So we thought we would share the story of our Fiona.

As many of you remember, Fiona was known as "Baby V" until her birth. We didn't know if she would be a boy or girl. So one night, shortly before she was born, we sat in her room and made a list of possible boy and girl names. We were fairly sure we knew what we would name her if she was a girl ... and it was not Fiona. We were still debating boy names but had good possibilities.

When she finally came out, I took one look at her and thought "that's a Fiona." But since that wasn't the girl name we had decided on, I didn't know if it would fly with her dad. About an hour after we had her, I finally got to see her again in the NICU. The nurses asked if we had a name and we both said "no." When we got back to my room, I could tell Mike was thinking of a name. I asked him what he thought and he finally said, "I think she is a Fiona." I smiled happily and told him that's what I thought too. So we called the grandparents and aunties and it became official.

But - it gets better. The next evening when we were visiting the NICU, the same night nurse was there. She pointed to the board where it said "Fiona" and asked if that was her name. We thought it was a weird question, but confirmed. She laughed and said that the nurses the night before had played "what would we name this baby" and had decided on "Fiona" as well.

So that's the story of our girl. Fiona just suits her!

10 Months

Little Bug was 10 months old on Wednesday. This has been a great month (I know - we say that every time). Both Mike and I feel like there has been a huge spike in her learning in the past weeks. The girl is off and is not looking back.

I can't write a post long enough to describe all the things she is doing now. So I'll hit the highlights:
  • Crawling: She finally figured it out and is a speed demon. As I mentioned in a previous post, Yogi is exhausted because he is the favorite target.
  • Pulling up: She is working on pulling to her knees and occasionally will try to pull all the way up. She doesn't have much confidence in her legs, but we are working on it. She is very proud when she can stand "by herself" in her crib or at her music table.
  • Talking: Grandpa V has started calling her jabberwocky because she chatters so much. In the last couple days, she has started saying "hi" when she waves. LOVE it! She is a big mimicker of the sounds we make. The "quarter" rule for inappropriate words is going to be in full force now.
  • Reading books and playing in general: She loves it.
  • Throwing things: pacifer, blocks, shoes, rings ... food. Favorite place to throw things - at Yogi.
  • Eating mostly table foods: the baby food store in the cupboard is shrinking and she doesn't seem to miss it.
  • Sippy cup mastery: Straws rock! We may even switch to formula in the sippy cup soon. The past couple mornings she has held her bottle all by herself. Where did our baby go? This is a big girl!!

Talent and Trouble

Fiona and I were playing last Sunday while Mike was at softball. We worked on putting the rings on our stacker. It was really fun to watch as the concept started to make sense in her head. She has quickly moved from amateur to pro on her ring stacking skills in the last week.

We also continue to work on our crawling. Favorite targets: Yogi (he's barely slept since she became mobile. it's not safe for beloved puppies!), Yogi's food, Yogi's toys, Yogi's kennel, the remote, the computer cords, and the blinds. Not so favorite targets: her toys. I love this video because she is giving her Dad a run for his money!! And she finishes by showing off her new sit spin. Silly girl!

Family Pictures

We have all been enjoying the beautiful weather of the last few days and have gone on several "adventures" [you can't say or spell WALK with Yogi around] with Gma J this week.

In celebration of some great family time, I thought I would share a few of my favorite family pictures from our photo shoot.

I love the look she is giving her Dad
