Monday was our last full day at the Mille Lacs cabin. We woke up to cool, windy weather. It did not look like a great day to be in the lake. But we definitely wanted to DO something. So we all decided to check out the second nearby state park. Kathio State Park was about 30 minutes away, on the other side of the lake. We grabbed an early lunch and headed out.
I had done some internet research that morning, reading reviews and suggestions about the hiking trails. We stopped to grab a couple park maps and pulled off into the first parking lot to take a peek. That parking lot was the trailhead for the Glacier Ridge trail. Mike suggested we do that 1.2 mile loop. I suggested that we drive all the way in to the Landmark Trail and the Observation Tower, which is what the Internet People suggested.
The Landmark Trail was pretty "meh." It was a nice enough path that they clearly have spent a lot of time on. There were trail signs with information about the history of the park every 100 yards or so. [The level of enthusiasm on the information and amount of signs varied greatly within the group.] There were wild raspberries growing along the edge of the trail and the enthusiasm for picking and eating those was universal. After we finished that loop, we drove over to see the Observation Tower ... which is apparently closed indefinitely. Basically, the Internet People let me down.
We decided to check out the Glacier Ridge trail on our way out - just to see if it was any better. The kids were kinda over it, so we promised them that we didn't have to do the whole loop. We'd just go until we all wanted to be done. They were good with that.
Fun facts about the Glacier Ridge Trail. #1: No one believes it was 1.2 miles. Maybe 2(ish). #2: Trails that are rustic and full of mud and roots and bridges are WAY more fun. #3: Holding the gummy worms bag in the middle of the woods will make all the mosquitoes swarm you. #4: Having more adults than children during a NOT 1.2 mile hike is the way to go - when you aren't sure how much farther to go and short legs need a piggy back ride.
It took us almost two hours to do the loop, but it really was so much fun. Quinn had the best time being the trail leader for the majority of the walk. Fiona did a fantastic job calling back warnings for mud and roots and bridges. It was a super narrow trail that typically required us to walk single file. The good news was that other than one other set of three people, it was just us out there (such lovely social distancing).
By the time the kids said they were tired and wanted to turn back, we told them we were just as close to finishing the loop as turning around (looking back, this was false. But not intentionally false). They did such a great job hanging in there. They each got a couple short piggyback rides near the end, but no one was whining or complaining. They just needed a few minutes to rest their legs.
By the time we got out, we were a hot and sweaty group. We could not wait to get back to the cabin and jump in the lake. Gma wanted to stop at the quilt shop on the way back, so Auntie joined our car for a direct path to the cabin/lake. We had forgotten how windy it was on the east side of the lake. We got out at the cabin and every one of us took a look at the waves and the wind gusts and said "nope" to the lake. Luckily Gpa had stopped at DQ on the way back, so we ate dilly bars instead.
We all kept looking at the lake that afternoon and feeling sad that we weren't going to get one more dip. After dinner, the girls begged Mike to go in with them. You guys, it was not warm and it was so windy that there were legit white caps on the waves. But Mike told them okay - and told me that I had to go in too (we need multiple adults for these "ocean" waves). Then Dec decided he might as well try too. Auntie was heading home that night because she had to work the next day, so she offered to be a spotter on the dock.
Mike and I were not looking forward to it. We figured everyone would last five minutes and be freezing. We could not have been more wrong. It was so.much.fun. Probably the most fun we had all weekend! The waves were huge (several broke over D's head. And Mike's head), but they were such a blast to jump in. We were all screaming and shrieking and squealing. Eventually D had to go to the bathroom, so Auntie offered to take him. When they came back out, Auntie had her suit on too. It was too much for her to resist!
Quinn and Dec got pretty cold after a while, but Fiona hung in there for quite a while. Mike plays to an audience and was doing his own wave-riding tube routine that had Fiona breaking down in belly laughs. Even when she finally got out because she was so cold, she sat on the dock, wrapped in towels, laughing at her dad. Gma and Gpa couldn't decide if Mike's antics or Fiona's laughter were funnier!
We sent Auntie home, tucked the kids in bed, and started organizing all the remaining stuff. We had to be out before lunchtime on Tuesday morning. It was such a great weekend and just the very best family and adventure time! Like I said before, we are so grateful that the stars aligned for us to take these days together.
